How to Verify an Ultrasonic Cleaner Supplier’s Claims Before You Pay: Frequency, Power, Cavitation

Your balance payment is due, but the evidence is a controller display and a clean-looking sample. If ultrasonic cleaner frequency selection rests on that display, the operating frequency remains unverified. Why release payment before agreeing how an independent technician will check the claims under your production load?

We would attach an acceptance schedule to the purchase agreement: the quantity being verified, measurement method, loading conditions, instrument suitability, uncertainty, acceptance criterion and action after a failed or inconclusive result. An ultrasonic cleaner testing plan needs separate evidence for frequency, power, cavitation distribution and finished-part condition. Agree who performs each check and supplies the records before testing starts.

Verify frequency independently of the controller

For the buyer accepting a quoted 40 kHz line in Germany, obtain the generator specification before measuring. Establish whether 40 kHz denotes a fixed frequency, a sweep centre or a nominal value around which resonance tracking operates. Record the agreed operating range, sweep behaviour and any pulsed operation.

An independent technician can use a calibrated hydrophone connected to external acquisition equipment and a spectrum analyser to examine the liquid field. The probe enters the liquid; the analyser stays outside. Verify the acquisition system’s frequency accuracy and timebase calibration, plus the probe’s calibration traceability, usable bandwidth, sensitivity, dynamic range, temperature rating and suitability for cavitating liquid across the frequencies being assessed.

Document probe positions, working liquid level, chemistry, temperature, degassing state, basket and parts. Measure at multiple positions with representative production loads, retaining time records as well as spectra so that sweeping, tracking or mode changes are not hidden by averaging. Include frequency resolution and measurement uncertainty in the comparison with the agreed specification.

A qualified electrical technician may also measure the generator drive using appropriately rated, isolated equipment and a safe access procedure. Electrical drive spectra and liquid spectra answer related questions, but their peaks need not match individually. Harmonics, broadband cavitation noise and instrument saturation can alter traces; waveform distortion alone does not establish generator mismatch.

Assess deviations against the purchased operating window and the measurement uncertainty. There is no universal frequency tolerance that proves every generator healthy. Record an inconclusive result for investigation or repeat measurement instead of forcing a pass or fail.

Check every quoted mode with parts in the tank

In the buyer’s hypothetical 28/40/80 kHz quotation, verify each selected mode under a documented load. Capture switching, settled operation and a return to the previous mode; compare measured centre frequency, sweep range and timing with the quotation. Repeat with the quoted mixed steel and aluminium load, as well as any separately run batches.

The numbers in that example are buyer requirements, not verified specifications for Jietai’s three-frequency series. Confirm the offered model’s actual modes in its written specification. A menu with several frequency labels is not evidence that the corresponding drive and liquid responses occur.

Higher frequency may be a candidate for reducing mechanical erosion, to be verified in trials. It does not establish aluminium compatibility: chemistry, temperature, power and exposure time still require assessment. Inspect cleaning results and surface damage for each proposed recipe, without imposing an arbitrary universal test duration.

Separate electrical power, heating and cleaning action

A mains power analyser measures electrical input, including connected heaters and pumps. Generator output requires a separate electrical measurement suited to the waveform and voltage-current phase relationship. Neither quantity directly gives acoustic power at a part surface; require the supplier to identify what its quoted wattage represents.

Calorimetry estimates heat accumulation within a defined boundary. For the liquid alone, average net heating rate = liquid mass × specific heat capacity × temperature rise ÷ elapsed time. That result is not automatically delivered acoustic power.

Define whether the calculation includes the tank, basket and parts; account for their heat capacities where applicable. Control heater operation and investigate pump heating, transducer conduction, heat loss, evaporation and temperature gradients through a documented baseline and correction method. Report assumptions and uncertainty separately from cleaning acceptance.

For equipment in the digital power adjustment range, ask how the displayed setting relates to the quoted power definition. Compare settings using the same measurement boundary and load. A change in displayed percentage alone does not quantify the change in acoustic delivery.

Use cavitation checks within their limits

Foil testing can form an agreed qualitative distribution check. Specify foil material, thickness, tension, position, liquid conditions and exposure duration, then retain the patterns for comparison. Its repeatability is limited, and a foil pattern supplies neither acoustic watts nor proof that every recess is clean.

Choose test positions around the usable loaded region; a sheet in an empty tank cannot establish coverage behind production fixtures. Run foil tests separately from contamination-sensitive parts and remove fragments before cleanliness trials. Why accept a visible cavitation pattern as proof of cleanliness when the contamination inside the part has not been measured?

Measure the basket fit and working liquid volume

For the buyer’s quoted 100 L tank and 500 × 300 × 250 mm basket, calculate the basket envelope: 0.500 × 0.300 × 0.250 = 0.0375 cubic metres = 37.5 L. This is occupied geometric space, not the solid displacement of an open mesh basket. Do not subtract it from the quoted capacity to obtain working liquid volume.

Measure internal dimensions and the clear loading path, including handles, supports, transducer housings, heaters, drains and lid travel. Check the supported basket height, immersion of the parts and clearance during movement. Obtain required clearances and operating levels from the agreed drawing and equipment constraints, then verify them under load.

Distinguish brimful geometric capacity from working liquid volume. Independently measure the fill or establish a level-volume calibration, recording the empty and loaded conditions, actual solid displacement and trapped air. Check overflow and return behaviour during loading; proximity to an overflow alone does not demonstrate a misquoted capacity.

Assess sound exposure at occupied workstations

For the buyer’s 25 kHz line beside workstations occupied for an 8-hour shift, commission a qualified occupational noise assessor. Measure at representative worker ear positions during normal production, including loading, unloading, permitted lid opening, pumps and adjacent equipment. Include representative high-noise tasks and record their durations and background conditions so exposure reflects the shift, not a brief demonstration.

Require a measurement chain with documented frequency response and calibration covering the high-frequency and ultrasonic bands of interest. A field calibrator check alone does not establish sensitivity across those bands. Select instrument range, microphone placement and analysis settings to avoid overload or misleading frequency weighting.

Report audible daily A-weighted exposure, the applicable peak metric and high-frequency or ultrasonic third-octave results separately. An A-weighted daily value cannot replace an ultrasonic exposure assessment. For a German installation, have the assessor identify the current applicable criteria and any measurement gaps; this article provides no verified legal limits.

Operating frequency alone cannot rank machines by workplace loudness. Assess enclosure, lid, isolation or workstation changes against the measured sources, then repeat the assessment after implementation. A proposed relocation distance is not evidence that exposure has become acceptable.

Requalify the recipe when moving to production scale

For the buyer moving a recipe from 10 L to 300 L, the practical question is: how well do ultrasonic cleaners work with the actual production basket? Equal W/L is neither necessary nor sufficient for acceptance. Even a preliminary comparison requires the same power definition and measured working liquid volume.

Stored settings, such as those offered by the digital multi-functional series, help preserve a recipe, but cannot demonstrate that it transfers between tank sizes. Trial representative adverse loads and positions: dense packing, shielded surfaces, blind cavities and parts near the limits of the usable region.

Repeat across the agreed temperature, contamination and bath-age boundaries, including fresh solution and conditions approaching its agreed replacement point. Include filtration loading, solution circulation and temperature recovery between batches. Distinguish fresh-fill degassing from routine production cycles rather than adding a fresh degassing stage before every batch. Agree repetition and sampling from process variability and part risk, without assuming that an arbitrary grid or run count establishes repeatability.

Acceptance should cover residual contamination, material or coating damage, rinsing, drying and accepted parts per elapsed production time, including loading and handling. ISO 16232 and VDA 19.1 provide technical cleanliness frameworks; they are not wastewater standards and do not set the customer’s part-specific limits. Agree the inspection method and limits with the part owner.

Retain the raw records, load photographs and recipe revision with the acceptance decision. A passing sample from the easiest position cannot clear a failing part elsewhere in the agreed load. Resolve discrepancies through documented corrective action and repeat the affected checks before authorising the payment milestone tied to acceptance.

Bring the basket drawing, production constraints and dirty parts to a discussion of Jietai’s customization service. Jietai offers a free cleaning test using the buyer’s dirty parts. Calibrated frequency or power measurements, specified cleanliness analysis and workplace noise assessment require separate agreement and, where needed, an independent technician or third-party laboratory.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I verify the right ultrasonic frequency and chemistry for my workpiece?

Provide your part material, dimensions, incoming contaminant and cleanliness target. Jietai can run a free sample cleaning trial in our Dongguan factory to confirm the operating frequency, bath temperature, detergent family and cycle time before you order equipment.

How should parts be loaded in the ultrasonic cleaning basket?

Place workpieces in a stainless steel mesh basket or dedicated fixture so parts never rest directly on the tank bottom and critical blind holes or passages point upward or at an angle that lets trapped air escape.

When do I need a multi-tank line instead of a single benchtop ultrasonic cleaner?

A single benchtop tank suits small batches, maintenance and laboratory work. Choose a multi-tank ultrasonic cleaning line with dedicated filtration, rinsing, DI water polishing and hot-air drying when hourly production throughput or strict residue limits apply.
